I found this ring while looking for an engagement ring and liked the setting immensely. I want to know it's names so that I can search for a similar ring set with a diamond. http://gemgallery.com/details.asp?ID=209&type=jewelry&catID=1

Tension Setting
by: Anonymous

Hi Mike,
Glad you found a setting that you like. My guess is that this ring is a tension setting with curved white gold bands holding the sapphire in place.

Here's a little bit more info on tension settings: A tension setting means that the gemstone is held in place by pressure rather than prongs, a bezel or other mounting. The metal setting is actually spring-loaded to exert pressure onto the gemstone, and tiny etchings/grooves are added to the metal in order to create a shelf for the gemstone's edges to rest. The gemstone appears to be suspended in the air with nothing holding it in place.

Hope this helps,
Julie
