The History of Kate Middleton’s Engagement Ring

The ring that Kate Middleton now wears on her finger has a distinguished history, even if it was only made in the early 1980s. This is because it was the same ring that Princess Diana was given when Prince Charles proposed to her all those years ago. You would probably expect then that this means that the ring was was custom made and cost millions of dollars, but you would be wrong! The ring was actually on general sale and cost just $42,000 when originally bought. Now this might sound like a lot of money to you and I, but it must be remembered that we are talking about royalty here – most people would have expected Charles to have spent millions!

Kate Middleton’s engagement ring obviously holds huge significance to William, as it is a link to his mother, who passed away in 1997, following a car crash in Paris. This means that the gesture is worth far more than the ring could ever be worth – a clear sign that he intends to be with Kate for the rest of his life. As engagement ring enthusiasts though, we obviously had to take a closer look into what makes this ring so beautiful!

The first thing to talk about when it comes to Kate Middleton’s engagement ring is the types of stones used. As you would expect from one of the world’s most glamorous couples, the ring does include a diamond in it, but there is a twist – they have broken with convention and also included a sapphire in there are well. All in all the ring is 18 carats and is absolutely stunning because of it; expect to see a massive rise in the sales of diamond and sapphire rings in the near future!

When it comes to the actual ring, it is dainty and made from light colored materials, therefore meaning that it does not look garish and fits in perfectly with the reserved and unpretentious image that the Royal Family likes to portray. It did reportedly have to be resized though, as Kate’s hands are said to be rather a lot smaller than William’s late mothers were! This is a simple job though and it would surely have been done at one of London’s top jewelers, of which there are many!

Whatever anyone says about the ring, one thing is for sure – it is the perfect symbol of love for William to have given to his bride. With a mixture of family significance, great beauty and understated charm, nobody in the world can accuse this Royal couple of being too elaborate or trying to draw attention to themselves – this is a ring that is for them, not for the rest of the public.
