heirloom engagement ring

hi there
my fiance used his great grandmothers ring as an engagement ring to me and i love the meaning behind it and feel honoured to wear it. i would like to keep on wearing it but would like to add something to it that makes it my own...is it wrong to change the ring? would it be better to just have a wedding ring matched to it and pizaz that part?
